AFS is the oldest international exchange program in the world. During the World Wars I and II American Field Service volunteer ambulance drivers assisted wounded soldiers on the battlefields. In 1946 the ambulance drivers began to arrange international study exchanges as a way to promote cross cultural understanding. Since that time more than 300,000 students and adults have been exchanged. AFS is beginning its 62nd year of providing intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.

Why host with AFS?
AFS is a highly selective program. All exchange students are outstanding students in their home communities, pass specific qualifications, and must have some level of English proficiency to participate with AFS. What's more, students are excited to learn about our culture! They want to share their lives with new family and friends, and change their own lives forever through cultural exploration. Perhaps the greatest thing about opening your home is the chance to build bridges of intercultural understanding. Host families, through their willingness to share their lives and expand their families, can find they receive even more than they give. AFS host families have always come in many shapes, sizes and colors - diversity and acceptance is, after all, what AFS most strongly encourages! Hosting is a way to learn about the world, to invigorate & liven home life and to learn more about yourselves.
